Around 2.4% of global CO2 emissions come from air travel, and the aviation industry is responsible for around 5% of global warming (more here). Taking 1 less transatlantic flight saves 1.6 tons of CO2 per year (read more here). Check out these steps to see how you can green your travel!

Steps to Take

  1. Reduce your annual travel when you can. Cancel that work trip and meet via videoconference instead, or take a vacation closer to home.
  2. Consider alternate forms of transportation if you do need to travel. Such as:
    1. Taking the train: Check out this article for a story of a Boston resident who now takes the train to visit her family in California each year – and finds it to be far more enjoyable than flying!
    2. Taking a bus
    3. Taking a car: Especially if you’re traveling via electric car! If you’re traveling via non-electric car, travel by car is usually greener than flying if you have one person traveling, and is always greener if you have more than one person traveling (read more here)!
  3. If you do fly, consider these tips to reduce your impact (more details here):
    1. Fly economy: Business or first class seats take up more space and weight on the plane, reducing efficiency and increasing emissions compared to economy seats.
    2. Choose direct flights: Flights with layovers at regional hubs can increase the distance traveled and increase overall emissions. Sites like Google Flights can help estimate the emissions of different itineraries to help you find the most efficient route.
    3. Choose to fly with an airline that uses the newest aircraft, and on mid-sized planes: Newer models tend to be more efficient than older models. Additionally, very small regional jets or very large, four-engine aircrafts are less efficient than single aisle or small twin-aisle aircraft.
    4. Travel light: Reducing the weight of your baggage will reduce the fuel the plane needs to burn.
